I Have A Secret

I can somewhat relate to this, because when I am 10 lbs. overweight I don't get noticed as much and I too feel a freedom in it.
Being or trying to be "perfect" with a perfect body, makeup, outfit, life, etc.. all the time... for what or for whom? It is all so exhausting.
What are your thoughts?
xo,
Christina

I was getting ready to go to lunch to meet my friend last week. My husband asked who I was meeting. He was baffled that I'd take so much time (30 min maybe?) to get ready to meet up with her. I think my asking about my outfit choice is what got him. I told him that as soon as we get together, she will look at what I have on. The look may not be obvious, but she'll compliment something specific or say I look good overall. If I don't have myself together, she will think something is wrong. Maybe that's just my friends and me, but most of us pull ourselves together for each other when getting together for lunch. I think it shows respect. And basically, I'd say I dress for other women and myself. Having on a nice outfit helps me feel good. Cuz let's face it, as women we are supremely judged by how we look.

Great question!

it's nice once and awhile to feel like you are looking your best, but for me, I have to be in the mood. I like the idea of fading into the crowd and being anonymous, ie: FAR from perfect. when I was living in NYC that was so great, you are SOOOO anonymous there and there is freedom in it, you don't always have to feel like you are getting all dolled up. I feel like in So. Cal people check you out much moreboth good and bad, just more judgey if that makes sense. anyhew... :)

great topic! I think it depends on the context: sometimes I'm annoyed when someone comments on my femininity/physical features/beauty/appearance (esp. when I'm in a professional context and want to be taken seriously and treated with equality)...sometimes there's also liberation in invisibility. However, sometimes it is depressing not to be noticed; I also do get a sense of pleasure from preening and primping, just because, just for me.

Oh, I was also going to agree with Conquer the Monkey...I am so relieved to have moved from Vancouver BC (which is like the Canadian L.A.) to outside of Toronto (the Canadian NY). I don't like places/people with excessive emphasis on outer perfectionism. Where I live now, I don't have to worry about whether I'm taking the dog out in sweatpants. Where I used to live, one felt underdressed all the time....!

Oh I so agree! It's difficult not to get caught up in that "stuff" with all the media surrounding us and pressuring us to be so perfect...It's so unrealistic! I posted something along these lines last summer on my blog: http://www.rossettimarketing.com/appreciating-your-body/
Thanks for reminding me that I need to focus on what is beautiful and fabulous about me and "get over it" when it comes to my flaws....
Love you sis! :)

I love this. I constantly obsess over my weight; basically it determines my entire mood for the day.

Of course...
I always think that I make up for myself but the truth is that I do it for the rest of people, my Boyfriend, my friends, my family... when on my own, I am happy in my pyjamas and with bare skin, so I suppose we all dress up and make up and all that because of the rest of the people... sad but true!
